A temporary sports hall at a primary school for the municipality of Purmerend

Neptunus constructed a temporary sports hall for the municipality of Purmerend

The assignment

The Municipality of Purmerend required additional space for their physical education needs at short notice. Due to developments in the area, a permanent sports hall was not a logical option, yet a solution was needed for a period of at least 10 and up to 15 years. Relocatability was therefore a key requirement, without compromising on quality, comfort or appearance. In addition, the temporary gym had to be constructed at a location directly adjacent to the school.

The solution

The fully completed temporary gym was finished within 15 weeks, from groundworks to final handover, with the actual construction by Neptunus taking just one and a half weeks. The complete gym consists of two seamlessly connected structures. The Flexolution III provides 264 m² of space for sports and physical activity. In addition, a Flexolution II accommodates all required facilities, including changing rooms, an entrance area, a first aid room and storage for sports equipment. Together, they form one efficient and fully equipped facility, entirely tailored to daily use by pupils and teachers.

The challenge

The main challenge was to deliver a fully functional sports facility within a short timeframe in a residential area. The accommodation had to fit within the existing surroundings and avoid any negative impact on the streetscape or the daily lives of local residents. At the same time, the building needed to be suitable for intensive daily use and have a lifespan of at least 10 to 15 years, while remaining the ability to be relocatable. This required a smart balance between quality, appearance, sustainability and flexibility.

The result

The result is a modern temporary sports facility with a strong and durable appearance. The anthracite coloured façade panels, combined with green wall planting, ensure a natural integration into the surroundings and contribute to the green environment of the school grounds. The structure is fully circular and constructed from reusable materials. If the situation in Purmerend changes, the building can easily be relocated and re-built at a new location. This provides the municipality with a future proof sports facility that can flexibly adapt to changing space requirements.
