Neptunus plays key role at world leaders’ nuclear summit

US President Barack Obama and 57 other world leaders gathered for the two-day conference in The Hague to formulate international agreements to prevent terrorists from getting their hands on nuclear material that could be used to make nuclear weapons.

The high-profile event, hosted by The Netherland’s Prime Minister Mark Rutte, required a comprehensive temporary infrastructure to be in place to assist with the intensive security operation to protect the politicians, and to handle the accreditation process for several thousand official delegates and world media represenatives who attended the conference.

Neptunus was appointed to provide a wide range of facilities for key elements of NSS 2014. A 25-strong Neptunus build crew erected nearly 4,000 square metres of temporary structures, including Alu Halls and Alure Globes, at locations throughout The Hague which included:

  • Three specialist areas with security access points for delegate and press accreditation
  • A large holding area, including catering and toilet facilities, for the huge police operation where hundreds of officers were on stand-by
  • A large facilitiy which acted as a security shield outside the Gemeentemuseum where President Obama and Prime Minister Rutte held a press conference at the conclusion of the summit.

The Gemeentemuseum project was completed in record time with the structure built in just half a day and dismantled over night immediately following the conference, to minimise distruption.

In addition to Neptunus’ own workforce, an 80-strong team from Neptunus’ supplier companies also provided support for a  total turnkey solution for the summit including internal fit-outs of the facilities with lighting, power, airconditioning and cleaning. The structures also required flooring that could cope with the weight and sensitivity of specialist security scanning equipment.

Dorrie Eilers, Director of Neptunus, said: “NSS 2014 was a massively high-profile assignment for Neptunus requiring a fast and efficient response to all the various projects we were contracted to supply to the Dutch Government and to the police. Construction took place amid the very tightest of security, as befits such an international gathering of world leaders, with build and dismantle processes scheduled to minimise disruption in very prominent and busy locations in The Hague.”
